The Process Is Called Pyrolysis And Is Thermochemical

What that means is that due to the very high temperatures reached in the decomposition of the plastics, the organic materials separate into different components without oxygen. By heating the components under pressure and limiting the oxygen, then none of the harmful toxic pollutants are created that would result from  burning. For the most part, the longer molecular chains are broken down into shorter chains, but still retain most of their chemical energy.

The oil from plastics process results in many familiar fuels like kerosene, gasoline, diesel and then expensive solvents like toluene, xylene, and benzene. The typical ratio of plastic to fuel machine is approximately one kilo of waste plastic to about one liter of fuel. If the plastic was just burned as is for fuel, it would produce about 3 kilos of CO2 because of the addition of extra oxygen from the atmosphere.

The following plastic have been found to be compatible with this type of recycling: PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS and PVC. There are a few others but they are less common in the waste streams.
